Reed Diffusers

Reed diffusers offer a low-maintenance way to continuously infuse a space with captivating fragrance. They create an inviting ambiance and add a touch of elegance and style to a home.

This short guide contains a few suggestions and tips that will help you get the most out of your Rosie & B reed diffuser. With every reed diffuser purchase you will also receive a card with guidance on using your diffuser, information about diffuser performance, and advice on product care.

SO HOW DO REED DIFFUSERS WORK?

As soon as the diffuser reeds are inserted into the bottle, the fragranced liquid is drawn into and up the reeds by a process known as capillary action. On reaching the top and sides of the reeds, the molecules in the liquid interact with the surrounding air, the liquid evaporates, and the scent is dispersed.

Rosie and B diffusers have fibre reeds that do not clog in the way other types of reed can. There are thousands of filaments in just one fibre reed and the diffuser oil is absorbed through the microscopic gaps between each filament — each of these gaps acts as a capillary channel. Furthermore, with fibre reeds the diffuser oil is able to move laterally to the outsides of the reed, as well as vertically towards the top, and this is the main reason why this type of reed performs so efficiently.

HOW MANY REEDS SHOULD I USE?

You may find that you do not need to use all of the reeds that are supplied with your diffuser. When deciding how many to use, it is worth remembering that:

  • with more reeds the fragrance throw will be stronger;
  • with fewer reeds a diffuser will last longer and the fragrance will be a little lighter.

If a diffuser is used in a medium to large room it may be necessary to use all of its reeds so that the level of fragrance is sufficient. And in still larger spaces, and open-plan areas, it might be necessary to use two diffusers of the same fragrance to achieve optimum performance.

In a small space, on the other hand, the desired level of fragrance may be achieved with fewer reeds. Personal preference for the strength of a scent plays a very important part, of course, but it is useful to consider the size of a room to help you judge how many reeds to use.

Unused reeds are worth keeping safe, as they can be added to the bottle at a later date should a scent boost be required.

IT’S ALL ABOUT GENTLE AIR FLOW!

Diffusers are at their happiest in locations where there is gentle ventilation and air circulation, as this encourages distribution of the fragrance and helps to maintain good diffusion.

Areas where people spend time, or pass through, are good locations for a diffuser as motion helps to move fragrance molecules away from the diffuser and bring not-yet-scented air into contact with the diffuser.

Too much air movement on the other hand, such as from an open window, or a fan, can dispense fragrance too quickly and reduce the longevity of a diffuser.

OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

A number of other environmental factors influence diffuser performance - there are a lot of variables: the size, temperature and humidity of a room, as well as the amount of sunlight.

An important factor to be aware of is ambient temperature. In warmer environments, the viscosity, or thickness, of diffuser oil is reduced, and the molecules in the oil move faster. This results in more rapid evaporation and diffusion. Furthermore, warmer air creates stronger air currents which will tend to disperse a fragrance more quickly.

Diffusers should be kept away from radiators and not placed on window sills with direct sunlight. And in periods of hot weather, it is usually worth using fewer reeds.
